Hi this is John with Designer Appliances. In this article, we’ll walk through what makes Miele the best dishwasher brand in the world while giving you everything you need to select the right Miele for your home. So why should you consider a Miele dishwasher?
At Designer Appliances, we think a dishwasher should be quiet, it should be easy to load and unload, and at the end of a wash cycle your dishes should come out clean and dry.
Miele is best in class in all three of these categories. Also, even though Miele dishwashers tend to be a bit more expensive than other brands, they’re built to last for 20 years which is about twice the life expectancy so at the end of the day we think it’s a worthwhile investment to buy a dishwasher you’ll love using that will last for 20 years.
Once you’ve decided to invest in a Miele dishwasher, you’ll need to select which style you prefer as well as which series has the features that are most important to you. When it comes to style all Miele dishwasher series are available with a visible control panel or with a hidden control panel. You can also select your finish of either stainless steel, white or black, or panel ready which allows you to install a custom wood panel to match your surrounding cabinets.
Miele offers five different series of dishwasher: Classic, Crystal, Dimension, Lumen and Diamond. Although all Miele dishwashers are built to last with the same high quality components, as you go up in series the dishwashers get quieter and you’ll pick up additional specialized wash cycles. Also you’ll gain added racking flexibility as well as other convenient features.
Miele’s entry-level dishwasher is the classic series. These dishwashers give you classic Miele wash performance and longevity without all the bells and whistles. While not the quietest Miele dishwasher at 46 decibels, you’ll likely notice an improvement if the dishwasher you are replacing is 10 years or older.
The classic series has all the basic wash cycles you’d expect in a modern dishwasher: normal pots and pans, sanitize wash, express wash and rinse and hold. In the classic series, you’ll have the option of going with a traditional silverware basket or you can upgrade to Miele’s cutlery tray for added storage space. Next in the Miele lineup is the Crystal Series, which is our top-selling line of Miele dishwasher.
The Crystal Series has all the features of the Classic Series plus a few more that really make the Miele brand stand out. The Miele Crystal Series is one decibel quieter than its Classic cousins with an operating noise level of 45 decibels. As the name implies the Crystal Series includes a wash cycle for gently handling delicate china and Crystal glasses, so if you frequently read these types of items, this feature is a must.
And the Crystal Series and above you’ll get Miele’s auto open feature which automatically opens the door at the end of the wash cycle allowing excess steam to evaporate resulting in dry dishes even if you forget to unload the dishwasher for days. If you’re in an area with hard water this dishwasher has a built-in water softener to improve wash performance.
The Crystal Series gives you extra loading flexibility with the upgraded 3D Plus cutlery tray as well as additional points of flexibility throughout the dishwasher. Next up is the Miele Dimension Series which starts to bring the Miele lineup in to industry-leading quietness at 44 decibels with an extra quiet cycle that will run all the way down to 40 decibels. If noise level is a primary concern of yours we recommend you start your Miele search with at least the Dimension.
In addition to the quieter noise levels, you’ll also gain additional points of flexibility for even more loading options. With a Dimension Series you’ll get all the wash cycles from the previous two series plus you’ll gain a wash cycle specially designed to clean stove grates and hood filters as well as a self-cleaning cycle to keep your dishwasher looking and smelling fresh.
Lastly the dimension series gives you Miele’s flexi timer which gives you the ability to schedule the start time for your dishwasher. The Lumen Series introduces some very unique luxury features. First off at 42 decibels, or 38 decibels using the extra quiet cycle, the Lumen Series is the industry’s quietest dishwasher.
The Lumen Series gives you access via Wi-Fi allowing you to control the dishwasher remotely via Miele’s custom iPhone and Android apps. Inside you’ll notice these dishwashers feature elegant full interior lighting with Miele’s brilliant lighting system.
For ultra-modern kitchens, if you want your dishwasher to fully disappear into your kitchen design select Lumen dishwashers feature knock-to-open which allows you to open the dishwasher by knocking on the door panel eliminating the need for a handle. The Lumen Series gives you two extra wash options: extra dry which gives you guaranteed dry dishes even with notoriously difficult to dry glasses and plastics; and intensive lower basket for cleaning heavily soiled and baked-on messes.
You’ll also pick up three additional wash cycles: energy saver, economy and sensor wash which automatically selects the correct wash cycle based on your load. And finally we have the Miele Diamond – Miele’s top-of-the-line dishwasher series. The Miele Diamond features Miele’s sensotronic controls on models with a visible control panel and touch on metal sensor buttons for models with a hidden control panel.
You will also pick up two additional wash cycles: tall items and glass with no rinse aid, which allows you to wash glasses without dispensing rinse aid. You’ll also get 2 additional wash options soak, to soak dishware with dried on food; and pre rinse for enhanced cleaning at the beginning of the cycle. We hope this Miele buying guide has been a comprehensive and helpful overview of what to expect when shopping for a Miele dishwasher.
